My Nocturne is a piece of scenic writing whose subject is no different from that of the Chopin nocturnes. The challenge was to find my own way to depict that subject. For instance, the push and pull of Chopin’s rubato might give the listener an impression of the wind blowing through trees; the push and pull in my music is differently realized, but, I hope, equally vivid. I played the premiere of this piece on a beautiful summer evening on the island of Samos, Greece, and so I will forever associate this piece with that magical time and place.
